Correlations between inside and outside spending

My inaugural column for the online InsideCounsel, dated May 24th, looked at an example of correlations between inside and outside spending of law departments.

We are at an exciting point in law department research because the database of metrics from 600+ law departments permits analyses that could not previously have been done reliably. Correlations, as illustrated in the Morrison on Metrics column, are but one of the statistical tools that we can now bring to bear. Insights from it will improve hugely on mere descriptive metrics. A step beyond, regression will be the exciting next frontier, especially as regression calculations will be tied to actual practices.
