How can a law department encourage knowledge management contributions?

Responding to a survey, the ever-creative Bruce McEwan rated the following methods from one (most effective) to five (least effective) for fostering contributions by law firm partners to a KM system. (See my post of today on brokering knowledge, instead of publishing.)

Technique/Incentive ………………………………………………………………..Partners
A one-time incentive or reward ……………………………………………………….4
Authority or direction from partner/immediate supervisor to contribute 5
Contributions to KM recognised as part of the appraisal process …………….2
Peer recognition and respect ……………………………………………………….1
Provision of a charge code to record the time used for KM …………….3

The ratings are likely to apply to practitioners in law departments. If peers reward you for sharing information, you are collegial and have something like a community of practice. Second, you need to formally evaluate people on what they have done to build intellectual capital in the law department.
