Ten dumbest things GCs can do as managers of the law department

In declining order, no less. What do you think? Doesn’t this provoke you to respond: write Rees!

1. Mismanage the people in the law department.
2. Not model the behavior they expect from their staff.
3. Allow clients to hire and direct law firms for significant work.
4. Believe that systems – not people – control outside counsel costs.
5. Implement technology without first improving processes
6. Rely only on informal client feedback about satisfaction.
7. Convey that being a good lawyer is all that important.
8. Manage sans metrics
9. Organize lawyers by law-school subject rather than business or staff group.
10. Use only the accounts payable system to track spending data.
